Taguas - Panama
Taguas are the seeds or nuts from a variety of palms found in parts of tropical Central and South America. These seeds are also commonly known as vegetable and/or palm ivory. Artisans have taken to carving these seeds. The tagua carvings on this site were produced by artisans from the Wounaan and Embera tribes of Panama.
When opportunity permits, always carefully examine the tagua carving for defects and possible holes caused by insect intrusion. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as with other art forms, there is a wide range of artistic quality and craftsmanship to be found in this medium. The vast majority of tagua carvings, while 'charming', are of poor quality for a serious collection.
